Artist Statement

My deliverables explore and compare the intersection of scientific accuracy and artistic expression, focusing on the essential role of traditionally made scientific illustration. My goal is to convey appreciation for the natural world, highlighting organic forms seen in fauna and flora through the expressive and free-flowing media of watercolor painting. These illustrations compare and contrast the subtle and obvious differences between AI-generated and traditionally painted scientific illustrations, focusing the errors present when generating the AI counterparts for my thesis project.

Created with precision and intricate study of the specimens presented, I painted with the intention of creating illustrations that accurately represent the art of traditional scientific illustration. My intent was to instill an appreciation for an undervalued form of art that is still crucial to scientific fields of study and research. By creating the matching AI-generated illustrations, I hope to bring awareness to the potential of AI art and illustration while also bringing attention to their limitations.

Inspired by a love of traditional watercolor and the natural world, this series of paintings seeks to highlight the role of traditional illustration in a world increasingly saturated with artificial intelligence. Both artistic methods can be appreciated, while also acknowledging the areas that require future refinement and research, reminding us to better rely on observational skills and critical thinking when using AI to generate scientific imagery.
